San Jacinto Wilderness
stone hut near summit
The San Jacinto Wilderness offers some of the most beautiful hiking trails in California. It offers breathtaking views, rock gardens, lush meadows (cienegas), and abundant wildlife. Several trails are pretty tough and offer great training opportunities while the Palm Springs Tramway can save you some steps for a modest fee. Keep your loads light and get an early start as the lower portions of trails can become quite hot by mid-morning. The summit is frequented by summer thunderstorms so watch the weather. Also, the final hundred or so feet of the hike are class-3 climbing; you will need to use your hands to get to the top but you will be rewarded with a 10,000' view almost straight down the north face.
One of the best reference books for this area is John Robinson's San Bernardino Mountain Trails, 100 hikes in Southern California. It provides useful information for hikes and trips throughout the San Bernardino National Forest, as well as wilderness and state park areas.
